Endowed Professorship of Intelligent Networks

The engineering faculty of Freiburg University has acquired another future-oriented mainstay: The “Department for Sustainable Systems Engineering” (INATECH) will extend the faculty’s spectrum in research and teaching. “This strategic expansion opens up an enormous potential for us in teaching, research and the transfer of technology”, says the university's rector Prof. Hans-Jochen Schiewer. “As a full-fledged university we were already excellently positioned in research on the subject of sustainability. With INATECH we now have a unique feature, which promises many groundbreaking approaches to research and innovations, and will greatly enhance the international appeal of our university.”

“The creation of INATECH is a significant step in establishing Freiburg as a world renowned center for advanced research, teaching and further education on sustainable development, where scientists, innovative start-up founders and long established companies can join forces”, says Dr. Simone Schwanitz, department head in the Ministry for Science, Research and Art in Baden-Württemberg.

Scientists at INATECH focus on three main subjects: They research into sustainable materials, which can be produced and used with a minimum of energy and resources. They develop systems that enable reliable supply of 2 forms of renewable energy as well as their storage and efficient use.  And they guarantee the resistance and adaptability of systems (the resilience) vis-à-vis short-term or long-term changes, such as natural disasters or climate change. The concept for INATECH, which initially envisages 14 endowed professors – seven each from the university and the Fraunhofer Society – was evolved jointly by university scientists and five Freiburg Fraunhofer Institutes: It is simultaneously the engineering nucleus of the “Sustainability Center of Excellence” which the Albert-Ludwigs University and the Fraunhofer Institutes founded in March 2015.
