University of Freiburg awarded cluster of excellence for “Future Forests”
The Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation congratulates the University of Freiburg's “Future Forests” Cluster of Excellence: The interdisciplinary research network (spokesperson Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bauhus), consisting of 25 applicants from Freiburg and around 20 other cooperation partners, was awarded funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Science Council on Friday. The new “Future Forests” Cluster of Excellence will receive around 57 million euros in funding over the next seven years. A total of 70 clusters of excellence spread across Germany were selected: 25 new cluster applications and 45 continuations will receive funding totaling 539 million euros per year for the next seven years. The University of Freiburg was successful with two cluster applications and can now compete with 14 other German universities for the title of “University of Excellence” in the second funding line.
“Future Forests” is the first cluster of excellence in forest sciences since the federal and state governments launched their Excellence Strategy. The Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation has contributed to the strong positioning of the Freiburg team, particularly in recent years, by funding various projects and elements at the University of Freiburg.
