Sustainability Research

The University of Freiburg is one of the leading universities in Germany in sustainability research and wants to expand this status even further in the future. Activities in very different formats contribute to this. The Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation strengthens this sustainability research with a whole range of measures.

„Sustainable development is the greatest global challenge. Science is particularly challenged - so the foundation's commitment here is very welcome.“
Prof. Dr. Daniela Kleinschmit
Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Sustainability at the University of Freiburg

For example, interdisciplinary “Saltus!” Research groups receive substantial funding for two years. These groups are characterized by excellent scientific performance and great innovation potential and serve primarily to stimulate new collaborative research.

With the Young Academy for Sustainability Research, the university wants to promote the thematic networking of young researchers nationally and internationally. For this purpose, two fellows and 14 other academy members were selected to jointly advance the interdisciplinary discourse and initiatives at the interfaces between science and society in the field of sustainability.

In addition, the profile field Environment and Sustainability serves to strengthen the networking and profiling of research in this area across the eleven faculties of the university.

Further funding from the foundation, such as the endowed professorship for forest genetics, the research group and the course on sustainable materials at the Institute for Sustainable Technical Systems, and the professorship for cross-scale material characterization also contribute to strengthening the topic of sustainability in research and teaching.
